سازمان آموزشي ، علمي و فرهنگي ملل متحد (يونسكو) به همراه شركايش روز جهاني زبان مادري را از 14 سال پيش تاكنون گرامي داشته اند. ما براي نشان دادن اهميت تنوع زباني و چند زباني ؛ سازمان‌ها ، كنفرانس‌ها ، كنسرت‌ها و سمينارهايي در سراسر جهان تشكيل داده ايم.
پاسداري و ترويج از زبان‌هاي مادري كليد اصلي شهروندي جهاني و درك متقابل صحيح ميان آنهاست. فهم و سخن گفتن به بيش از يك زبان منجر به درك بيشتري از ثروت تعامل فرهنگي در دنياي ماست. به رسميت شناختن زبان هاي محلي مردم بيشتري را قادر ميسازد تا صدايشان را به همگان رسانده و نقش فعالي در سرنوشت اجتماعي‌شان داشته باشند. به همين دليل است كه يونسكو هرگونه تلاشي را جهت توسعه دادن همزيستي هماهنگ 7000 زبان مورد تكلم بشريت انجام ميدهد.
امسال ما تاكيد ويژه اي بر "زبان‌هاي محلي براي شهروندان جهاني : تمركز بر علم" داريم كه اين موضوع نشان ميدهد كه چگونه زبان‌ها دستيابي به علم و انتقال و افزايش آن را تامين (تضمين) مي‌نمايد. برخلاف نظر عموم ، زبان هاي محلي بطور كامل قادر به انتقال تازه ترين علوم در رياضيات ، فيزيك ، تكنولوژي و ... هستند. همچنين شناختن ان زبان‌ها به معني باز كردن دري به روي قسمت بزرگي از موضوعات علمي – سنتي كه ناديده گرفته شده اند است كه منجر به غنا و توسعه ي زيربناي دانش كلي‌مان ميشود.
زبان‌هاي محلي در زمينه ي علوم ، اكثريت زبان هاي مورد تكلم در سراسر جهان را تشكيل ميدهند. همچنين اين زبان‌ها بيشتر در معرض خطر قرار دارند. حذف و ناديده گرفتن زبان‌هاي مادري به معناي محروم ساختن تمام سخن گويان آن زبان‌ها از ابتدايي‌ترين حق بشري‌شان در دانش و كسب علم است.
و اكنون نيز ، ايجاد رابطه حسنه بين مردم "دهكده جهاني" ، كوشيدن در راستاي توافق و درك متقابل و گفتگو را اساسي و بسيار با اهميت ميكند. در جهان امروز دست كم استفاده از سه زبان معمول است كه يكي از آنها زبان محلي ، ديگري جهت ارتباط گسترده‌تر و يك زبان بين‌المللي براي برقراري ارتباط در سطوح محلي و جهاني. اين تنوع زباني و فرهنگي بهترين فرصت براي خلاقيت و نوآوري و فراگير شدن در آينده براي ماست ، نبايد اين شانس را برباد دهيم.
روز جهاني زبان مادري افزون بر يك دهه است كه در پررنگ كردن نقش‌هايي كه توسط زبان‌ها در شكل دهي به ذهن ، كمك به افزايش شعور و درك و ايجاد شهروندي جهاني كه در آن همه ميتوانند در سرگذشت و چالش‌هاي جامعه سهيم باشند ، به ما كمك كرده است. من تمامي كشورهاي عضو يونسكو ، سازمان بين المللي فرانسه‌زبانان كه در بزرگداشت اين روز در سال 2014 مشاركت دارند ، فعالان اجتماعي و مدني ، فرهيختگان ، انجمن‌ها و شركت‌هاي فرهنگي و رسانه‌هاي گروهي براي كمك به محقق ساختن اين پيمان تنوع زباني در راستاي صلح و پيشرفت پايدار فرا ميخوانم.

UNESCO Director-General's Message
For 14 years now, UNESCO and its partners have celebrated International Mother Language Day. We have organized activities, conferences, concerts and seminars around the world to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism.
The protection and promotion of mother languages are keys to global citizenship and authentic mutual understanding. Understanding and speaking more than one language leads to a greater understanding of the wealth of cultural interactions in our world. Recognizing local languages enables more people to make their voices heard and take an active part in their collective fate. That is why UNESCO makes every effort to promote the harmonious coexistence of the 7,000 languages spoken by humanity.
This year, we place special emphasis on “Local languages for global citizenship: spotlight on science”, showing how languages ensure access to knowledge, its transmission and its plurality. Contrary to popular wisdom, local languages are perfectly capable of transmitting the most modern scientific knowledge in mathematics, physics, technology and so on. Recognizing these languages also means opening the door to a great deal of often overlooked traditional scientific knowledge to enrich our overall knowledge base.
Local languages constitute the majority of languages spoken across our world in the field of science. They are also the most endangered. Excluding languages means excluding those who speak them from their fundamental human right to scientific knowledge.
And yet, the rapprochement of peoples in the “global village” makes working towards intercultural understanding and dialogue ever more vital. In today’s world, the norm is to use at least three languages, including one local language, one language of wider communication and one international language to communicate at both the local and global levels. This linguistic and cultural diversity may be our best chance for the future: for creativity, innovation and inclusion. We must not squander it.
International Mother Language Day has contributed for more than a decade to
highlighting the many roles played by languages in shaping minds, in the broadest
sense, and building a global citizenship where we all have the means of
contributing to the lives and challenges of societies. I call upon all the Member
States of UNESCO, the International Organisation of La Francophonie – which is
associated with the Day in 2014 – those active in civil society, educators, cultural
associations and the media to make the most of this promise of linguistic diversity
for peace and sustainable development.
